Every year La Tomatina is celebrated in the Valencian town of Buñol. We are, indeed, talking about the tomato war which has become one of the most renowned traditions of the area. Locals and visitors alike get mixed up in this fight with vegetables on the last Wednesday of August. Dating back to 1945, nowadays it is a festival regulated with entry tickets during which all those in attendance will have a fabulous time if they follow a simple set of rules. Today we would like to invite you to book a low cost in Valencia in advance so you can come and blow off some steam at La Tomatina.

Why you should definitely come to La Tomatina

La Tomatina is just one of those things you need to experience at least once in your life. It’s not in vain Buñol takes in no less than 40,000 visitors each year, who come specifically to attend this red battle. It’s one of those unique opportunities you can’t miss out on.

The access is regulated by tickets. The cost of a single ticket is 10 Euro, which helps the city council to be able to control the festival and provide the necessary security measures for all the attendants. This way the venue isn’t so crowded and you can enjoy La Tomatina care free. There is an additional reason this year, because it’s the 70th anniversary since this tradition began, which means even more fun activities. It’s not just a tomato fight, but you can also fight to win a ham for free. Don’t think it’s as easy as that, though. In order to get to the ham, you will have to climb a large pole smeared with soap. Good luck!

A tradition dating back to 1945

If the reasons above aren’t convincing enough for you to book a low cost hotel in Valencia and come to have a blast at La Tomatina in Buñol, perhaps we can change your mind after you’ve read about the origin of this festival. As it happens with many other great things in life, this famous tomato war started in 1945 during a local celebration taking place at the town’s square, when a few youngsters got into a fight with each other. In the heat of the moment, they took whatever they had closer at hand, that just so happened to be a market stand with vegetables. There was no blood, but the kids who initiated this original fight returned the next year to the same spot to do it again, and so it stayed until the present day. Nevertheless, La Tomatina had been in danger of being banned on several occasions. Those who started the fight even got arrested for trying to continue with the tomato war, completely disregarding the ban imposed in the early 50s. For the next seven years, people were allowed to celebrate it, and then in 1957 it was cancelled again. Such development caused the locals to organise a demonstration carrying a coffin with a gigantic tomato inside. After these events, the authorities officially lifted the ban and allowed the celebration to be resumed.
